Head of Data Engineering & AI (Team Lead)

As our Data & AI practice continues to grow, we seek an experienced Head of Data Engineering & AI to lead our specialist team, shape our technical strategy, and deliver cutting‑edge solutions for customers across the UK.
This is a unique opportunity for a hands‑on technical leader who enjoys combining architecture, delivery, pre‑sales and people leadership. You will play a key role in growing our Data & AI capability while remaining actively involved in designing and delivering innovative solutions using the latest technologies from Microsoft, Databricks, Snowflake and the major hyperscale cloud providers.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Hybrid Cloud & Data Professional Services Director, you will lead a team of highly skilled consultants and architects responsible for delivering complex Data Engineering and AI engagements.
You will be responsible for:
- Leading and developing a high‑performing Data Engineering & AI team
- Driving technical excellence across customer engagements
- Providing architectural leadership across Data, AI and Machine Learning solutions
- Supporting pre‑sales activities and helping customers shape their transformation journeys
- Collaborating closely with Cloud, BI, Cyber and Managed Services teams
- Developing the strategic direction of the practice and supporting continued growth

What You’ll Be Doing
Leadership & Practice Development
- Lead, mentor and develop a growing team of Data Engineering and AI specialists
- Own team performance, utilisation, capability development and recruitment
- Drive technical standards, best practice and operational excellence
- Support strategic planning and practice growth initiatives
- Promote the Trustmarque Ultima Data & AI capability internally and externally through customer engagements, events and thought leadership
Customer & Technical Delivery
- Architect and deliver enterprise‑scale Data Engineering & AI solutions
- Support customers throughout the full project lifecycle, from discovery and design through to implementation and optimisation
- Provide technical leadership on complex multi‑vendor engagements
- Review and assure technical designs, proposals and Statements of Work
- Collaborate with sales, pre‑sales and managed services teams to maximise customer success and identify new opportunities
Technology Focus Areas

- Microsoft Fabric
- Databricks

- Data Warehousing & Data Lake architectures
- Data Engineering pipelines and orchestration
- Machine Learning platforms and infrastructure
- MLOps, Git and DevOps practices
- Custom LLM solutions and AI integrations
- Azure, AWS and Google Cloud Platform
- Data migration, optimisation and modernisation programmes
What We’re Looking For
- 10+ years’ experience within IT consulting, professional services or technology solutions environments
- 7+ years delivering complex Data Engineering and AI solutions
- Proven experience leading technical teams, practices or consulting functions
- Strong architecture, design and customer‑facing consultancy skills
- Experience supporting both pre‑sales and project delivery activities
- Deep understanding of cloud‑based data and AI platforms
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills
- Experience working directly with enterprise customers and senior stakeholders
- Broader cloud architecture experience across Azure, AWS or GCP
- Containerisation technologies including Kubernetes and Azure Container Services
- DevOps tooling and automation platforms such as Ansible
