Job Summary
Principal Mechanical Engineer – NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP‑SES) based in Cardiff. This role will support NHS Wales and the Welsh Government by providing expert mechanical engineering advice, managing the mechanical engineering team and acting as an Authorising Engineer (AE) in appropriate disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert mechanical engineering advice and support to NHS Wales and WG on all matters related to healthcare building services.
- Manage the mechanical engineering team, supporting the Head of Engineering.
- Act as an independent Authorising Engineer (AE) to approve and manage Authorised Persons (APs) at each hospital or trust.
- Validate mechanical engineering systems and conduct technical investigations on a Wales-wide basis.
- Represent NHS Wales on UK‑wide working groups and committees and disseminate information back to NHS Wales and WG.
- Act as project manager for mechanical engineering projects or technical investigations, ensuring effective delivery.
- Travel across Wales and to other NWSSP offices as required.
Qualifications
Essential
- Chartered Engineer and corporate member of a recognised engineering institution.
- Accredited Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in a building services discipline.
- Highly developed, advanced technical, practical and theoretical knowledge of complex mechanical hospital engineering systems.
- Strong IT computer skills.
- Excellent communication, team‑working and presentation skills.
- Project planning and management abilities.
Desirable
- Appropriate management qualification.
- Experience of giving technical presentations.
- Experience of producing or contributing to national estates policy.
Experience
Essential
- Senior experience in estates, design and/or capital projects, including line management responsibilities.
Desirable
- Experience producing or contributing to national estates policy.
Skills and Attributes
- Project planning and management skills.
- Ability to coordinate team activities.
- High levels of IT/Computer literacy.
