Role Summary
The Senior Active Travel Engineer will support the growth of our active travel team and provide technical excellence across the UK. The role focuses on design and delivery of active travel infrastructure projects of varying complexity and supporting high‑profile projects at the national and international level.
The position is based in any of our UK offices, with occasional travel to other offices and project locations.
Your Role
- Engage with active travel representatives across our transportation business.
- Produce task briefs, resourcing schedules and project plans for active travel design projects.
- Support technical projects and ensure high‑quality project deliverables.
- Manage client relationships and positioning.
- Provide ad‑hoc advice to internal and external clients about active travel design projects.
- Assist the wider Transportation team with complex projects such as UK standard, policy and guidance document updates.
- Help with business development across the UK for active travel and related disciplines.
- Coach and train junior or graduate level staff.
- Deliver technical training.
- Manage stakeholder engagement processes as required.
Qualifications
Degree qualified in a relevant subject (Civil Engineering or similar).
Essential Criteria
- Strong background in active travel design and scheme delivery.
- Strong client relationships and the ability to influence at all levels.
- Significant experience of active travel infrastructure design projects.
- High level of technical awareness of active travel standards, research, policies and best practice.
- Experience using UK standards and guidance documents such as Active Travel Act Guidance, Cycling by Design, LTN 1/20 and DMRB.
- Ability to devise and present initial and innovative solutions to complex active travel problems.
- Proven experience of work‑winning in a competitive environment.
- Experience supporting larger pieces of technical work such as town or city‑wide design programmes, including managing and prioritising own workload and that of others.
- Good understanding of the UK transportation market and geography, with an emphasis on local authority clients.
- Flexibility in terms of project delivery and working locations.
- Show skills managing multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Membership of relevant technical institutions – e.g. ICE, CIHT, CILT.
- Evidence of CPD relating to active travel infrastructure design.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience supporting delivery of technical training seminars.
- Experience of public and stakeholder engagement events.
- Experience in developing national policy and strategy documents and/or technical standards and guidance.
- Experience of road safety engineering, road safety audit or risk assessment.
- Site supervision experience related to active travel schemes.
- GG 142 Lead Assessor experience.

Security Clearance
This role may require security clearance. Offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV).
