An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced registered nurse to join our team as a Ward Manager within Stroke Services at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
This is a key leadership role where you will provide visible, compassionate, and inclusive leadership, ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and high‑quality care to patients following stroke. You will lead a dedicated multidisciplinary team, driving improvements in patient outcomes and experience in line with national and local priorities.
Main duties of the job
- Provide professional, clinical, and operational leadership to the ward team
- Deliver and sustain high standards of patient care, ensuring care is Kind, Connected and Bold
- Be accountable for ward performance, including quality, safety, patient experience, and flow
- Lead on audit, governance, and quality improvement, supporting delivery of key performance metrics including SSNAP
- Ensure effective workforce planning, safe staffing, rostering, and budgetary oversight
- Support staff development through appraisal, supervision, and education, fostering a positive and inclusive culture
- Work collaboratively with the wider stroke pathway and multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless patient care
- Champion continuous improvement and innovation within stroke services

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Adult Nurse on NMC register
Experience
- Professional portfolio demonstrating continuing professional development and evidence of maintaining professional registration
- Substantial relevant and recent clinical experience within a complex health care setting or Acute NHS setting, working as a deputy Manager Band 6, including supervision and education of junior staff/students
- Demonstrated understanding of practice‑based supervision and assessment as per NMC standards for student supervision and assessment
- Demonstrable current, recent experience of team leadership and management within the healthcare setting
- Demonstrable understanding of the management responsibility for pay and non‑pay resources associated with the clinical service
- Evidence of effective multi‑professional working
- Experience of being a mentor
- Demonstration of a significant contribution to innovative practice or change management
- Experience in interviewing and selection of staff
- Experience learning from incidents/complaints and supporting changes in practice
- Strong leadership, team building, resource management, time management, clinical governance, audit and research, workforce planning / management, NHS policy and political awareness, knowledge of clinical governance
