Job Summary
We are an NHS award‑winning department playing a leading role in the modernisation of pathology services in SE Wales in line with the Health Board’s Clinical Futures strategy, and the Welsh Government “Future Delivery of Pathology Services in Wales” document. We currently provide all services in‑house with no outsourcing to external providers. We are heavily involved in the design and creation of the All Wales Digital Pathology Programme, utilising AI algorithms for diagnosis of several specimen types, with a goal of implementing its use in the reporting of HER2 and associated ISH. The successful candidate will receive a new office, bespoke microscope, IT packages including laptop, digital equipment and secretarial support.
Responsibilities
- Lead the reporting of the Health Board’s current histopathology backlog, primarily GI and skin specimens, with opportunities to report other specialties.
- Provide a clinical and laboratory Cellular Pathology service to a catchment population of 650,000.
- Work within a fully supportive laboratory accredited to UKAS ISO15189, networked to deliver a comprehensive Cellular Pathology service to the area.

Additional Requirements
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice. Candidates for consultant posts must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be working towards specialist registration via CESR/European Community Rights and hold an FRCPath qualification. The position involves regulated activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act; a safeguard will be conducted through an adults and children’s barred list check.
