Job Summary
Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist in Band 8a or as a Band 7‑8a Development role. This rare opportunity offers an acute inpatient setting in Chertsey, built with current understandings of therapeutic environments and trauma‑informed care.
The post involves assessment and treatment of complex cases, consultation with multidisciplinary teams, individual and group therapy, team formulation, supervision, mentoring and teaching, plus family interventions and structured clinical management. Working with our acute inpatient mental health wards means supporting adults of working age in crisis and delivering interventions such as DBT, CBT for psychosis, family interventions, CBT for personality disorders and positive behaviour support frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough assessments and formulate differential diagnoses.
- Provide individual, group and family therapy.
- Lead and participate in complex case meetings.
- Offer supervision, mentoring and training to other staff.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies to plan safe discharge.
- Contribute to service development, project work and clinical practice improvement.
Qualifications
Essential
- Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (including pending 2026 qualification).
- HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist or current trainee eligible in 2026.
Desirable
- Completion of an appropriate clinical supervision course to enable supervision of trainees (or completion within 12 months of commencement).
Experience
Essential
- Experience working with people across the life span with a range of mental health issues and cognitive profiles.
- Experience with multiple psychological models including systemic, behavioural and individual therapy.
- Experience within the relevant care group (adult acute inpatient).
Desirable
- Experience supervising assistant and trainee clinical psychologists (Band 8a).
- Demonstrable post‑registration clinical experience and competency relevant to this care group (Band 8a).
- Experience contributing to clinical practice, service development or project work (Band 8a).
- Demonstrable interest and skill in a relevant specialist area (Band 8a).
