Role
As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing and commissioning industrial automation systems for a diverse portfolio of projects. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and specification through to commissioning and customer handover. This role offers a mixture of office-based engineering work and site commissioning activities, providing exposure to a wide variety of automation technologies and applications.
Key Responsibilities and Qualifications
- Design and develop PLC and HMI software using Siemens TIA Portal.
- Develop control system solutions for bespoke machinery and automated manufacturing systems.
- Produce software documentation, functional specifications, and test procedures.
- Configure and commission Siemens PLCs, HMIs, drives, and associated control equipment.
- Carry out system testing, FATs, SATs, and customer demonstrations.
- Perform on-site commissioning, fault finding, and troubleshooting activities.
- Integrate industrial communication networks and fieldbus systems.
- Work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, and customers to ensure successful project delivery.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and technical development within the engineering team.
- Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, or PLC Software Engineer.
- Experience developing PLC software from first principles.
- Knowledge of HMI development and industrial communications.
- Experience commissioning automation systems within manufacturing or industrial environments.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and control system documentation.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for commissioning activities.
- Experience with motion control and servo systems.
- Knowledge of industrial networking technologies.
- Exposure to robotics integration projects.
- Experience with alternative PLC platforms such as Allen‑Bradley or Mitsubishi.
- Understanding of machine safety systems and functional safety standards.
- Industry 4.0, data acquisition, or digital manufacturing experience.
