Job Overview
Locum Consultant Psychiatrist (Forensic Psychiatry) – 6‑month contract starting 17 August 2026. Based in East London Forensic Service at the John Howard Centre, Bow Ward. Approx. 6–7 female patients per caseload, cross‑cover on Thursdays & Fridays, assessments for admission to medium or low secure care, and liaison with high‑security women.
Main Responsibilities
- Clinical lead for the multidisciplinary team on Bow Ward (12 beds).
- Provide leadership, supervision and management of a complex population including acute needs, comorbidity and personality disorders.
- Conduct admissions assessments for women to female secure services.
- Provide cross‑cover for Dr Ratnam on Thursdays & Fridays.
- Maintain liaison with the small number of high‑security women.
- Deliver or support NICE guideline‑based care.
Essential Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Included on the GMC Specialist Register or to obtain within three months of appointment.
- Approved clinician status and S12 MHA approval.
- Ability to travel within East London and between clinical sites.
- Knowledge and understanding of forensic psychiatry.
- Excellent communication and decision‑making skills.
- Capability to function under MHA and MCA provisions.
Desirable Qualifications
- Higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
- Additional clinical qualifications.
- Good standing with GMC regarding warnings or conditions.
- Experience in quality improvement, audit and service evaluation.
- Experience in undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
- Experience in research, publications or presentations.

- Expertise in forensic psychiatry.
- Application of the bio‑psycho‑social model.
- Excellent oral and written communication in English.
- Management of clinical complexity and uncertainty.
- Evidence‑based decision‑making involving collaboration.
- Compliance with MHA and MCA duties.

- Interest and experience in quality improvement and audit.
- Participation in continuous professional development.
- Ability to appraise and use clinical evidence.
- Planning and execution of clinical audit and CPD activities.
- Experience in research, teaching and service improvement.
Benefits & Working Conditions
Locum consultant role with flexible working arrangements to be negotiated and relocation support for up to £8,000. Post is a 6‑month contract.
