Job Description:

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to senior respiratory physiologists in performing spirometry, reversibility testing, lung volumes and TLCO.
  • Assist with CPET (diagnostic and pre‑operative) and run independent spirometry clinics at local health centres.
  • Attend university courses to become AHCS registered associate practitioner.
  • Participate actively in clinical physiology service provision, performing duties either directly or under supervision as required.
  • Work independently on direct patient care within departmental and national guidelines.
  • Perform spirometry in unsupervised areas and assist with CPET set‑up and exercise tests.
  • Use the Respiratory Lab sterilisation and cleaning SOP; under direct supervision assist with airway challenges.
  • Be BLS trained, perform unsupervised full studies, and work on a shift system including unsocial hours as necessary.
  • Lead, teach and organise the department’s ATOs, supervising performance and shifts.
  • Contribute to the evaluation, selection and introduction of new equipment and technology.
  • Assist in ordering, stock control and receipt of consumable items used in clinical physiology.
  • Ensure safe use of respiratory function equipment, recognise and document equipment faults, and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintain clean and tidy procedural environments and support staff motivation to complete workloads.
  • Assist with maintenance of local risk‑management policies.
  • Apply knowledge of CVIS/IPM/Ascent and other respiratory information systems within clinical physiology.
  • Comply with Trust and local policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Foundation degree in Health Care Science, recognised by AHCS.
  • ARTP Certificate of Spirometry or registration with AHCS.
  • GCSE in Maths, English and Science Grade C or above or equivalent.
  • UK professional registration.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Enrolled Member of ARTP.
  • Previous experience as an Assistant Technical Officer in respiratory.
  • Previous experience supervising staff and training.
  • Competence in full‑study procedures to ARTP standards.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and IT skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Commitment to completion of work tasks at a high standard.
  • Organisational skills.
  • Ability to work to deadlines.
