Facilities Assistant – Catering

We are looking for a Facilities Assistant – Catering to join our Catering Team at Wathwood Hospital, Wath upon Dearne. Previous experience in a catering environment is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.

Position

  • Working pattern: 30 hours per week – 6 hour shifts over 5 days a week (including weekends and Bank Holidays).
  • Contract: Permanent part‑time.
  • Salary: £25,272 per year (pro rata for part‑time).

Main duties

  • Assist in the day‑to‑day running of the kitchen, providing meals for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Ensure high standards of customer service and food safety.
  • Complete all required paperwork in line with Trust policies and procedures.

Recruitment costs

Applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. The cost (£26.40 standard, £54.40 enhanced) will be deducted from salary over the first 2 months of employment. The annual DBS Update Service fee is £16.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Catering Department in delivering high‑quality, safe, and nutritious food.
  • Perform catering tasks as outlined in schedules, method statements, and procedures.

Person Specification

Knowledge – Essential

  • Basic knowledge of Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of a Catering Environment.
  • Basic knowledge of Food Safety.

Knowledge – Desirable

  • Knowledge and awareness of special diets and allergens.
  • Basic understanding of infection control.
  • Understanding of responsibility relating to H&S at work and COSHH.
  • Knowledge of manual handling.
  • Knowledge of NHS policy and procedures.

Qualifications – Essential

  • Basic Literacy & Numeracy.
  • Basic Food Hygiene.

Qualifications – Desirable

  • Recognised catering, cleaning or support services qualification.

Skills – Essential

  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to use own initiative to manage job requirements.
  • Flexible in managing time and duties.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Experience – Desirable

  • Experience working within a catering environment.
  • Experience with a food safety management system (HACCP).

Physical Requirements – Essential

  • Physical ability to perform the full range of duties.
