Responsibilities
- Ensure National Patient Safety Agency Cleaning (NPSA) Specifications and Publicly Available Specification (PAS) are adhered to by implementing ward cleaning schedules.
- Carry out spot cleaning (eg floors, toilets) as required, dealing with spillages swiftly and efficiently, using the appropriate equipment and cleaning products for each specific task.
- Use and store chemicals correctly in accordance with Care of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) procedures.
- Work efficiently to minimise disruption within the work area.
- Serve beverages direct to patients and prepare and serve meals, including collecting completed menu cards.
- Clean the ward kitchen, crockery, cutlery, and equipment to meet Environmental Health, departmental policies and procedures, and operate dishwashing machines.
- Maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and practices in accordance with the Catering Hygiene Policy/Food Handling Policy, and safely use cleaning materials, applying the appropriate mix ratio in line with COSHH.
- Promptly clear food and drink spillages and maintain patient tables and trays in a clean and hygienic manner, utilising the appropriate equipment and cleaning products for each task.
- Flush routinely the little used outlets (LUO) in line with the Trust Management of legionella and associated policies.
- Complete mandatory training within the specified timeframes and undertake any role‑specific training when required.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities by guiding and supporting new or less experienced staff during induction.
- Assist patients/clients during contact, especially in wards where communication barriers may exist.
- Provide verbal feedback to line manager or ward staff regarding patient comments, positive or negative.
- Report requisition or repair and maintenance of equipment to the appropriate person.
- Maintain work records such as fridge temperature checks, food temperature checks, cleaning and flushing of little used outlet records in line with departmental procedures.
- Participate in audits and surveys as necessary, recording faults and reporting them to the appropriate person.
Education and Qualification
- oLevel 1 English & Maths or equivalent spoken English and mathematics skills.
- Have gained or be willing to undertake food safety awareness training, or willing to undertake induction and on‑the‑job training to meet food safety standards required for the post.
- Previous experience of cleaning or catering within the NHS.
