Trafford Alternative Education Provision is seeking a committed, resilient and compassionate Teaching Assistant 2 to join our specialist team supporting pupils with a range of complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is an exciting opportunity to make a genuine difference in a pupil referral environment where relationships, consistency and trauma informed practice are at the heart of everything we do.

Many of our pupils have experienced disrupted education, trauma, or significant barriers to learning. The Role
As a Teaching Assistant 2, you will:
- Provide calm, relational and consistent support for pupils with SEMH, SEND and trauma related needs, ensuring safety and access to learning.
- Build trusting, positive relationships using trauma informed and attachment aware approaches.
- Support pupils to regulate emotions, manage behaviour and re-engage in learning through de‑escalation, emotional coaching and restorative practice.
- Assist with the delivery of learning activities, interventions and personalised programmes.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour patterns, triggers and achievements.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, therapists and external agencies.
- Support whole school behaviour systems, transitions and calm down spaces.
- Supervise pupils at non teaching times and accompany them on visits, trips and off site activities.
These responsibilities reflect the JD statements such as “Provide consistent, calm and relational support for pupils” and “Use de‑escalation strategies, emotional coaching and restorative conversations”.
What We’re Looking For
- Has experience working with children or young people, ideally in a pupil referral unit, SEMH or alternative provision setting.
- Understands behaviour as communication and can respond with empathy, consistency and professionalism.
- Can remain calm under pressure and use effective de‑escalation strategies.
- Has strong communication skills and can build positive relationships with pupils, families and professionals.
- Is committed to safeguarding, equality and the wellbeing of all pupils.
- Holds NVQ Level 2 (or is working towards Level 3) and is committed to ongoing CPD.
