Overview

The Highways & Waste team at Gateshead Council is responsible for ensuring that Gateshead is a safe and attractive place for residents, businesses and visitors. The team works on waste strategy, highway maintenance, street lighting and large restoration projects such as the Tyne Bridge. This role is part of the in‑house Highway Team that delivers day‑to‑day maintenance of the highways and footway networks throughout Gateshead.

Responsibilities

  • Work within a team of Highway Operatives to carry out maintenance and new construction duties.
  • Use and maintain necessary tools and equipment in accordance with applicable codes of practice.
  • Assist in numerous basic tasks related to highway operational duties, e.g. laying paving, kerbstones, installing concrete, tarmac and drainage.
  • Comply with relevant health & safety legislation.
  • Develop skills in setting out, reading and understanding site plans.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and tidy work environment, following Supervisor/Mentor instructions at all times.
  • Attend periodic learner reviews.
  • Attend all training relevant to the post.
  • Assist in maintaining a health, safe and secure environment and act in accordance with Council policies and procedures.
  • Develop knowledge of relevant handheld software.
