The Role

The Candidate must be permanently based in UK and will be required to attend meetings in the London office weekly. You will be required to travel to various locations on a frequent basis.

As a Senior Risk Engineer reporting to the Global Head of Risk Engineering, you will be an integral part of a team responsible for the execution of insurance risk engineering globally. You will support the Howden Natural Resources (NR) organization in client retention and acquisition in alignment with LMA guidelines. The role involves significant collaboration with clients, insurance personnel and underwriters in terms of value addition, loss‑prevention initiatives and risk quality.

What you’ll do

  • Development, execution and support of insurance risk engineering globally with the aim of client acquisition and client retention.
  • Local risk engineering focal point in UK for oil, gas and petrochemical (OGP) NR clients.
  • Lead a specific technical function within the NR risk engineering portfolio, e.g. downstream business.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and communication of risk engineering and technology related issues in NR for OGP occupancies.
  • Develop customer service plans, budget, coordinate field servicing, vendor management and interact with brokers, clients and underwriters to serve and meet the needs of our customers.
  • Execution of on‑site property damage and business interruption insurance surveys in the OGP sectors as per LMA guidelines.
  • Preparation of survey and other technical reports, technical reviews for OGP occupancies in line with Howden global risk engineering protocols.
  • Analyse third‑party technical risk information and asset valuation reports.
  • Develop loss‑prevention articles that add value to OGP clients and the insurance markets.
  • Represent Howden Risk Engineering in London at various events facilitated by the Oil, Petrochemical and Energy Risks Association (OPERA).
  • Maintain professional credibility and consistently demonstrate technical expertise and sound judgment.
  • Frequent travel locally and internationally.

  • Understanding of international standards such as NFPA, FM, API, EEMUA, UKHSE, etc.
  • Expertise in loss‑prevention and loss‑control for OGP occupancies.
  • Understanding of lessons learnt from recent OGP losses and the application thereof.
  • Strong understanding and expertise associated with natural catastrophe exposures.
  • Ability to develop estimated maximum loss (EML) with expertise in associated software packages.
  • Good report‑writing skills for risk‑management and technical reports in English.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience as an Energy/OGP Risk Engineer in an international insurance organisation. Candidate must have led energy risk engineering surveys for Oil, Gas & Petrochemical facilities independently and have written multiple insurance survey reports in accordance with LMA guidance.
  • At least 5 years of upstream/downstream industry experience in operations/process safety management/maintenance roles. On‑site experience is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated strong communication and listening skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with Howden staff, clients and underwriters.
