Lead Midwife – 24‑hour Maternity Triage

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic and motivated midwife to lead our maternity triage service.

This role requires excellent leadership and collaborative working across multidisciplinary teams and departments. The post holder will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operational management of maternity triage, ensuring that all women/birthing people presenting to the service are assessed and managed in a timely manner, with appropriate escalation and referral in line with clinical need.

The successful candidate will lead on the Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric Triage (BSOTS) system, supporting the ongoing education and development of staff in this model. A key focus of the role will be to drive quality improvement and innovation within the service, identifying opportunities to enhance standards of care and patient experience.

Main duties

The post holder will provide leadership and oversight of care for all women requiring the Maternity Triage facility on a daily basis, ensuring that the skill mix of the team meets the clinical needs of the complex demographic accessing the service.

Maintain clinical skills and competencies and demonstrate excellent communication. Work within NMC rules, standards, Trust guidelines and procedures.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and ensure planning, development, smooth running and maintenance of Maternity Triage.

Provide accurate, unbiased, evidence‑based information to the team and service users, empowering the team to do the same.

Job Responsibilities

  • Clinical responsibilities: Provide leadership in care of women attending Maternity Triage and maintain expertise in BSOTS model.
  • Ensure smooth day‑to‑day operation.
  • Communication & relationship skills: Develop and maintain effective relationships with multi‑disciplinary team, Emergency Department, and wider Trust; represent and promote the Women’s Service Unit and Women & Children’s Division internally and externally.
  • Managerial responsibilities: Manage team members daily; conduct appraisals; promote staff development and training.
  • Education, training and development: Create effective learning environment; ensure compliance with statutory and mandatory training.
  • Professional & legal responsibilities: Maintain patient confidentiality and high professional standards; participate in required supervision.
  • Operational & working conditions: Comply with Health & Safety policy; report incidents; participate in Maternity Bleep Holder rota.
  • Equality & diversity: Recognise and uphold rights; challenge inappropriate behaviour.

Person Specification

Qualifications and knowledge

  • Registered midwife.
  • Degree in midwifery.
  • Evidence of continuing professional education as per NMC requirements.
  • Completion of specialist fetal monitoring training and masterclasses.
  • Completion of a master’s degree, or actively working/planning towards one.
  • Experience of human factors training.

Experience

  • Experience in developing self, others and changing practice.
  • Knowledge of national maternity safety agenda and transformation programme.
  • Understanding of governance and risk processes in maternity.
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Experience in maternity triage and working within the multidisciplinary network.
