Overview
The Clinical Specialist Sonographer will deliver a specialist Head and Neck (ENT) ultrasound service, including independent scanning, reporting and ultrasound‑guided interventional procedures such as fine needle aspiration (FNA). The role supports timely diagnostic pathways, particularly within cancer services, including Two‑Week Wait and the 28‑day Faster Diagnosis Standard.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high‑quality specialist Head and Neck (ENT) ultrasound service, including independent scanning, reporting and ultrasound‑guided interventional procedures.
- Support timely diagnostic pathways for cancer services, especially Two‑Week Wait and the 28‑day Faster Diagnosis Standard.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team – Radiologists, ENT clinicians, Cytology and oncology – to support one‑stop pathways and contribute to MDT decision‑making.
- Provide clinical leadership within the sonography workforce, supporting training, supervision and development of junior staff.
- Contribute to education for Radiology Registrars and other learners.
- Lead service development, quality improvement and clinical audit activities to advance the Head and Neck ultrasound service.
- Apply advanced clinical reasoning and cross‑sectional imaging knowledge to inform patient management.
- Deliver a 7‑day service, including weekends and bank/public holidays.
- Provide an immunisation and vaccination report as required.
Qualifications and Training
- Band 7 level; qualified sonographer with experience in ultrasound, preferably Head and Neck or ENT specialist ultrasound.
- Trainee pathway available: structured training programme progressing to independent practice and full competency in Head and Neck ultrasound and FNA procedures.
- Experience in reporting and ultrasound‑guided interventional procedures is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and to support training and development of junior staff.
