Job Description

Senior Nurse Lead – responsible for leading the inpatient nursing team at Herriot Hospice, Thirsk, delivering high‑quality, compassionate hospice care to patients and supporting families and colleagues.

Key responsibilities include:

• Lead and manage the inpatient nursing team to deliver exceptional hospice care.
• Ensure safe, effective, and patient‑centred care at all times.
• Co‑ordinate the day‑to‑day operational management of the inpatient unit.
• Support, supervise, and develop nursing staff and Health Care Assistants.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and professional excellence.
• Ensure compliance with clinical governance, infection prevention, health and safety, and regulatory standards.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to achieve the best outcomes for patients and families.
• Lead service developments and support the effective implementation of change initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for a candidate who:

• Is a registered nurse with a valid nursing qualification.
• Has at least two years of post‑qualification experience and current NMC registration, having passed your first validation.
• Has experience in specialist palliative care.
• Demonstrates strong communication skills and a calm, empathetic approach to complex care situations.
• Has effective line management experience and is capable of teaching, coaching, and mentoring staff.
• Shows a compassionate and approachable leadership style with a passion for delivering high‑quality palliative and end‑of‑life care.
