Join our growing Digital Excellence community as a Junior User Experience Designer. In this role, you will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to design and prototype digital services that are user‑centred, accessible and inclusive.

What you’ll do

  • Use different techniques to understand users and their needs, translating user stories and proposing evidence‑based design approaches.
  • Design and prototype user interfaces that align with user needs and business goals for public and private sector clients.
  • Advocate for accessible and impactful services, ensuring solutions meet accessibility and inclusivity standards.
  • Work in a fast‑paced, evolving environment using an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid Agile delivery.
  • Communicate across organisational and technical boundaries, simplifying complex information for non‑technical audiences.
  • Learn how to use AI to enhance design processes.

Your profile

  • Keen interest in User Experience Design and User‑Centred Design, keeping up to date with industry developments.
  • SC (Security Check) Clearance.
  • Experience working with a User Centred Design team.
  • Empathetic approach and ability to listen to technical and business stakeholders and interpret their needs.
  • Working knowledge of iterative design process and UCD methodologies.
  • Competence in using design tools to prototype user interfaces at different fidelity levels and validate designs.
  • Ability to build dynamic prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript; experience with GOV.UK Prototyping is desired.
  • Experience with Kit and Figma.
  • Knowledge of Government Digital Service (GDS) service standards and GDS design principles.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and legislation such as WCAG.
  • Clear and effective communication of design decisions, presenting concepts to team members and stakeholders.

Ideally, you would also have

  • At least one year of experience in a User Experience Designer role or a design‑focused role in a professional setting.
  • A design portfolio that showcases your work.
  • A passion for learning and a willingness to develop your skills in line with client needs.
  • Experience or interest in accessibility testing or inclusive design principles.
  • Some experience testing and auditing assistive technology (e.g., JAWS, Dragon, ZoomText) and accessibility features for Windows and macOS.
  • Ability to analyse code for accessibility issues in HTML and CSS.

Need to know

Our offices are located in London, Manchester and Glasgow. While we offer hybrid working, you may need to travel to client sites and be flexible regarding assignment locations.
