NCA Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics – Soft Tissue and Arthroplasty

An exciting opportunity to join a well‑developed upper limb and trauma service within the Major Trauma Centre at Salford Royal and elective work within the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.

The weekly program is planned around an average of 10 sessions, which will include theatre, direct clinical care. The candidate will work in an established MDT weekly acute trauma including specialist LL trauma and elective LL and undertake patient related administration and supporting professional activities (SPAs). Delivery of DCC will be across the NCA footprint. Elective sessions will require some flexibility as part of the covid recovery plan.

One in 8 weeks the post holder will participate as a member of a team of 3 consultants in a week of trauma delivering care at Salford Royal managing both Orthopaedic trauma, major trauma and acute patients.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will above all be a productive and cohesive member of the Soft Tissue and Arthroplasty team able to provide ongoing patient care. The successful candidate should have:

  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Contribute to undergraduate, post‑graduate and continuing medical and multi professional education activity including teaching as necessary.
  • Conduct appropriate duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi‑Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.
  • Development of special interests that fit in with the Directorate needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
  • Undertake ward rounds as appropriate.
  • Have an out of hours commitment to trauma patient management as part of an on‑call rota. Job plan review pending implementation of Major Trauma rota.
  • Provide evidence‑based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.

Person Specification

Professional Registration & Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • FRCS (Tr&Orth) or recognised equivalent
  • ATLS
  • Fellowship training in Soft Tissue Knee surgery & primary knee arthroplasty
  • Higher degree such as: PG Master, PG Diploma, DPhil/PhD

Audit and Research

  • Interest and knowledge of audit
  • Evidence of completion of recent and regular audit
  • Published in peer reviewed journals
  • Presented at conferences/ meetings

Knowledge, Training and Experience

  • Within 6 months of CCT, or have CCT/equivalent
  • Fellowship training in Soft Tissue Knee surgery & primary knee arthroplasty
  • Logbook evidence of managing knee trauma, elective knee surgery and general trauma surgery
  • Experience with osteotomy & cartilage preservation surgery
  • Experience in the management of complex multi ligament knee injuries

Teaching and Education

  • Proven ability to teach
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
  • Formal teaching qualification

Skills & Abilities

  • Highly motivated
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet departmental targets
  • Up to date knowledge of NHS and future challenges
  • Ability to work in an MDT setting with allied healthcare professionals
  • Membership of BASK/BOA
  • Membership of relevant specialist membership bodies
