Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Successful candidates will join a team of 10 surgeons, specialising in knee arthroplasty, across three hospital sites in Worcestershire.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide elective knee clinics at Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.
  • Undertake a regular knee operating list at Alexandra Hospital, with access to dual‑consultant operating and support for complex/revision cases.
  • Run a regular day‑case arthroscopy/soft‑tissue knee list at the KTC site.
  • Contribute to the trauma rota and support the delivery of lower limb trauma surgery.
  • Participate in multi‑disciplinary team (MDT) working, including knee MDT and complex case discussions.
  • Provide a clinical service to patients of the Trust and to general practitioners.
  • Attend multi‑disciplinary meetings and work within multi‑disciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality clinical care.
  • Support the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely, appropriate care and patient flow.
  • Provide consultation and advisory services to clinical colleagues in the Trust and primary care.
  • Attend cross‑county and cross‑site meetings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high‑quality, timely service and meet the Trust’s objectives.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota to ensure emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, shared equally with consultant colleagues.
  • Attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary and to undertake patient reviews during weekend on‑call duties.

Person Specification

Experience

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Knees.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within the specialty.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
  • Expertise in sub‑specialty.

Teaching Experience

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise.
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Knee (or expected within 6 months of interview date) via:
  • – CCT or CESR (CP)
  • – CESR or
  • – European Community Rights.

Management & Administrative Experience

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the specialist service.
  • Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities.
  • Ability to manage and lead the specialty firm and multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.
  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate.
  • Ability to use evidence‑based clinical audit to support decision making.

Research Experience

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
  • An awareness of current specialty‑specific developments and initiatives.
  • Publications in relevant peer‑reviewed journals in the last 5 years.
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research.
