Consultant in Palliative Medicine

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust

Closing date: 07 July 2026. This is a part time post, 8.3 PA.

Job location: University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. Services include Royal Derby Hospitals (RDH) and Queens Hospital Burton (QHB) with associated community hospitals.

The Palliative Medicine Department provides services at the following units:

  • Nightingale Macmillan Unit (21 bed specialist palliative care inpatient unit)
  • Ward 2 (15 bed palliative care ward providing end of life care)
  • Hospital Palliative Care Team
  • Community Palliative Care Team for Southern Derbyshire
  • End of Life Care education team (hospital and community)

Main duties of the job

  • Work with the wider Palliative Medicine team to support in-patients with symptom control, decision making for treatments and onward planning for discharge.
  • Provide specialist Palliative Care to patients on the Nightingale Macmillan Inpatient Unit.
  • Conduct an outpatient clinic for Palliative Medicine patients.
  • Serve as a senior member of the inpatient multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supervise and support resident doctors and medical students.
  • Act as a point of contact for calls to the department for advice and referral, maintaining awareness of bed states to ensure appropriate placement.
  • Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and comply with appraisal and revalidation requirements.
  • Work to achieve personal, departmental and Trust objectives.
  • Participate in the out of hours consultant on call rota.
  • Contribute to leadership, management and service development of the wider Palliative Medicine department.

Language and Communications skills

  • Evidence and ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties.
  • Attended an Advanced Communications skills course.

Qualifications

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent.
  • GMC registration with licence to practise at time of application.
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register, or eligible for entry on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview, or if applying for Specialist Registration via Portfolio Pathway (Formerly CESR) provide evidence of submission prior to interview.
  • Postgraduate qualification / Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to speciality.

Clinical Experience

  • Evidence of independent clinical practice.
  • Experienced in making clinical decisions & managing risk.

Management

  • Experience of managing and leading a clinical team.
  • Experience of audit management.
  • Evidence of attendance on a management/leadership course for consultants.

Teaching Experience

  • Evidence & experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills.
  • Evidence of attendance on a formal recognised Teaching training course.
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates.

Audit/Research Experience

  • Experience of & Commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP).
  • Evidence and ability to assess & apply evidence based research into everyday clinical practice.
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the speciality.
  • Recent experience in Palliative Medicine research and a desire to continue research.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 a year pro rata (per annum).
