Service Designer – UK Government Department (Discovery Phase)
£515 per day (Inside IR35) 3‑month rolling contract Remote‑first (occasional travel as required)
A major UK Government Department is seeking an experienced Service Designer to lead a discovery phase on a high‑impact public service. You’ll work across multidisciplinary teams to understand user needs, map current journeys, and shape the future service direction
What you’ll be doing
- Leading discovery activities to understand users, map the as‑is service, and identify pain points and opportunities
- Working closely with User Researchers, Product Managers, BAs and Technical Leads to define hypotheses and shape the to‑be services
- Creating high‑quality artefacts including service blueprints, journey maps, service concepts and ecosystem maps
- Facilitating workshops to align stakeholders and ensure decisions are grounded in user insight
- Ensuring alignment with GDS service standards and user‑centred design principles
What we’re looking for
- Strong experience as a Service Designer within government or similarly complex environments
- Proven track record delivering discovery phases and shaping service direction
- Ability to work across digital and non‑digital channels, mapping end‑to‑end services
- Confident communicator able to bring clarity to complex problem spaces and influence senior stakeholders
