Diabetes Healthcare Assistant

We are looking for a Diabetes Healthcare Assistant to join our multidisciplinary team within the Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. You will work closely with nurses, doctors and allied health professionals to support the care and treatment of patients with diabetes and endocrine conditions, ensuring safe, effective and person‑centred care throughout their journey.

Main responsibilities

  • Prepare clinic notes and consulting rooms ready for use.
  • Provide the efficient service of the day‑to‑day running of the clinics, ensuring notes and necessary documentation is in place.
  • Use IT systems Millennium & SystmOne.
  • Carry out duties such as performing urinalysis, measuring weight and height, working out BMI, taking baseline observations including blood pressure and pulse, foot checks and blood glucose monitoring, performing blood glucose meter downloads, removing dressings in foot clinic, chaperoning patients during examination.
  • Receive and action enquiries from patients and colleagues both face to face and via the telephone.
  • Attend departmental meetings and engage in projects to improve the department.
  • Book patients in and out of the clinics in the absence of the department receptionist to ensure the patient receives the best service.
  • Ensure the department is effective and efficient with smooth running of clinics, with a high emphasis on the provision of a good customer service and effective patient flow.
  • Contribute to a team approach to patient care in conjunction with nursing colleagues, medical staff and allied healthcare professionals.
  • Help to conduct endocrine tests such as Short Synacthen following protocols. This requires venepuncture.
  • Assist in undertaking tasks and procedures as per responsibility in which competency has been assessed and is specific to the care environment.
  • Receive patients/visitors into the area.
  • Ensure all patient information is available, up to date and accurate.
  • Liaise with all members of the department team and personnel within the trust to ensure effective smooth running of clinics, ensuring that Consultant‑specific requirements are carried out prior to and post consultations.
  • Manage the maintenance of stock levels used within the department.
  • Help promote and maintain a safe and clean environment conducive to meeting the needs of patients and their relatives.
  • Provide support and reassurance to patients and their carers.
  • Provide privacy for patients and respect confidentiality at all times.
  • Assist with cleaning tasks, errands or general duties appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Undertake any administrative and clerical duties as required.
  • Participate in audit and research activities as required.
  • Be proficient in safer patient/load handling and constantly be aware of the importance of using the correct techniques when moving patients and clinic bags.
  • Be aware of your responsibility in relation to infection control policy and procedures i.e. effective hand‑washing technique and escalation of infection control risks to the appropriate team.
  • Take part in daily safety briefings.
  • Be up to date with basic life support, and appropriately raise the alarm in the event of a medical emergency.
  • Escalate any hospital transport failures to the appropriate team.
  • Complete DATIX reports for any adverse incidents witnessed.
  • Complete SHIRE reports for any environmental damage/failure.
  • Report any medical equipment failure to MEMS.

Person Specification

Essential criteria

  • Understands and is committed to a caring approach to patients & relatives.
  • Able to demonstrate genuine interest in caring for people.
  • Experience of working with in a team.
  • Understands the need for strict confidentiality.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience as a Health Care Assistant or other caring role.
  • Experience of caring for people in hospital or other care settings.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills at interview assessment.

Desirable criteria

  • Completed Care Certificate.
  • Previous experience as a healthcare assistant in a hospital setting.
  • IT training/qualification.
