About the role
Working to improve the access and participation of Deaf and Hearing‑Impaired students, both academically and socially, by providing a range of communication support methods that meet the individual or group needs while raising awareness within the classroom and college wide.
Main Responsibilities
- Convey the contents of lessons in a variety of settings – classroom, workshops, online (onsite or from home), work placements and other learning environments.
- Use one or more skills appropriate to student needs – lip‑speaking, sign‑to‑voice/voice‑to‑sign translation, note‑taking and live explanations.
- Use appropriate support according to the student’s subject area, level of course, maturity and other additional support needs.
- Be prepared to be directed by the SEND Advisor for Hearing‑Impaired regarding the type of support to be provided in class.
- Liaise with the SEND Advisor for Hearing‑Impaired, Subject Tutors, EHCP Coordinators and Lead Transition Progression Coordinator to keep abreast of the student’s course, materials and changing support needs, and prepare for lessons in advance.
- Undertake tasks that increase the immediate accessibility of course materials – e.g. explaining the language of handouts and adding notes.
- Highlight any new terms and concepts that the student may have difficulty understanding.
- Alert staff that course materials may need modification – handouts, video transcriptions and/or subtitling.
- Assist in the preparation of transcripts and video subtitling.
- Support students outside of scheduled class time to complete work set by subject tutors.
- Inform the SEND Advisor for Hearing‑Impaired where mainstream lecturers or peer groups would benefit from Hearing Awareness Training and contribute to the development of strategies.
- Respond positively to mainstream lecturers and student peer groups in a clear, supportive and professional manner to facilitate the inclusion of Hearing‑Impaired students into the college.
- Seek guidance and advice from lecturers, the SEND Advisor for Hearing‑Impaired and visiting Teachers of the Deaf as appropriate on issues relating to the support of Deaf and Hearing‑Impaired students and provision for any additional support required.
- Enhance opportunities for students to be independent while maintaining professional and personal boundaries at all times.
- Keep regular records and undertake support‑related administrative duties as required – entering a detailed record of support provided on college systems (Pro‑Monitor) and submitting a weekly work‑time record sheet.

As the successful candidate, you will be offered a salary of £32,942.51 to £39,308.99 per annum (pro rata for hours and weeks worked), based on the skills, knowledge and experience you bring to the role.
