Job overview

The Safeguarding Adults Specialist Nurse will provide professional nursing leadership in safeguarding adults, domestic abuse and supporting adults at risk. They will support the Trust to meet safeguarding targets, deliver training, advise staff and represent the Trust at multi‑agency safeguarding forums.

Key duties

  • Provide visible day‑to‑day safeguarding adults support and advice across the Trust.
  • Ensure statutory provision under the Care Act and Mental Capacity Act is met to a high standard, treating patients and families with dignity and respect.
  • Support the Trust in achieving safeguarding key performance indicators and contribute to Local Safeguarding Adult Boards, Serious Adult Reviews and Community Safety Partnership processes.
  • Embed lessons from safeguarding reviews, audits and national guidance into Trust practice.
  • Advis, train and support staff to discharge safeguarding responsibilities when caring for vulnerable adults.
  • Deliver safeguarding training to a variety of professional groups and provide specialist support for learning disability and mental health agendas.
  • Challenge poor practice and influence change in partnership with internal and external agencies.
  • Maintain a high and visible profile, act as a credible role model and provide specialist expert advice on mental health, mental capacity and DoLS issues.

Clinical & Professional responsibilities

  • Contribute to Local Safeguarding Adult Boards and Community Safety Partnership processes, including domestic homicide reviews.
  • Support the wider safeguarding team – learning disabilities, reasonable adjustments, mental capacity, Prevent agenda, mental health and Liberty Protection Safeguards.
  • Act as a lead contact for the Trust on Domestic Abuse and provide expert advice, support and training.
  • Prepare and complete safeguarding activity reports and attend quarterly Trust Assurance Group Board Meetings.
  • Understand and act on next steps in the safeguarding process, referrals, information sharing and record keeping.
  • Maintain professional registration and adhere to the relevant Code of Practice of a professional body.

Administrative responsibilities

  • Keep Trust databases updated regarding safeguarding referrals, DoLS, LiPS and mental health sections.
  • Support ward staff in completing referrals and reviewing feedback from local authorities.
  • Ensure documentation meets mandatory reporting requirements.

Teaching & training responsibilities

  • Provide face‑to‑face training and resources for staff to meet mandatory training requirements.
  • Develop bespoke training to embed the Mental Capacity Act into everyday practice.
  • Attend relevant training and development to maintain and develop skills and knowledge.

Research & audit

  • Conduct audits as required; contribute to the Trust’s audit programme.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse – with a valid NMC registration.
  • Teaching qualification or experience of teaching groups.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of safeguarding adults legislation, the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act.
  • Experience working with service users lacking capacity, having additional needs and those at risk.
  • Experience of delivery of training to large audiences and working closely with partner agencies.
  • Evidence of leading change in a safeguarding role.

Skills

  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Ability to engage staff in mandatory training and bespoke learning.
  • Data recording, monitoring and analysis skills.
  • Robust report writing for a variety of audiences.

Other

  • Ability to travel to various hospital locations by own car, assisted driver or public transport.
