Generator Engineer (Workshop based) – Permanent Position at Finning Power Rental.
Overview
As a workshop‑based Generator Engineer you will support electric prime, backup and emergency power projects across the UK and Ireland. Your core responsibilities involve mobilising rental equipment, performing repairs and maintenance, and ensuring the fleet is serviceable and ready for hire.
Responsibilities
- Test, service and maintain the rental fleet, including generators, transformers, fuel tanks, load‑banks, cables, panels and ancillary equipment, according to maintenance schedules. (15%)
- Perform intermediate‑level repairs on rental equipment quickly, safely and efficiently, and complete all required documentation. (10%)
- Provide technical support and repair recommendations to maximize fleet availability and ROI. (10%)
- Lead the preparation and execution of inbound and outbound logistics, synchronising generators and verifying functionality. (20%)
- Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical systems, using internal systems to prevent future issues and maintain availability. (15%)
- Complete the Ready‑to‑Rent process, recording inspections and documentation. (10%)
- Lead rental returns and pre‑delivery processes, recording inspections and reporting damages. (5%)
- Maintain depot working areas in line with contamination control guidelines and ensure safe use of tooling and service equipment. (5%)
- Deliver high‑standard technical support and customer service to internal and external stakeholders, maintaining positive relationships. (5%)
- Complete accurate reporting and documentation in accordance with depot processes. (5%)
- Support on‑site work, including installations, repairs and maintenance, across all regions. (5%)
- Adhere to all Health & Safety policies and procedures, including risk assessments and incident reporting. (5%)
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong analytical, interpersonal and communication skills, able to explain complex technical issues clearly.
- Self‑directed and able to work independently in a fast‑paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Leadership experience, able to mentor apprentices and manage sub‑contractors.
- Resourceful, adaptable to changing circumstances, and commercially aware.
- Process‑driven with a flexible approach to 24/7 business.
- Excellent understanding of Health & Safety regulations.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, including control systems across the rental equipment portfolio.
- Good knowledge of load‑bank set‑up, testing processes and product range.
- Strong commitment to QHSSE and electrical safety policies.
- Driver’s licence and, desirably, forklift licence.
Education & Experience
- Apprenticeship trained, NVQ Level 3 (Mechanical or Electronic) or equivalent.
- Further mechanical and/or electronic engineering qualifications preferred.
- 5+ years’ experience in an engineering role within the rental energy sector or similar industry.
- Proven track record in testing, troubleshooting, maintenance and intermediate repairs of generators, transformers and load‑banks.
- Experience with generator, load‑bank and transformer set‑up and operation.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety and health & safety practices.
