Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dedicated Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) within the Cardiology Department at Frimley Park Hospital. Our CCU is a 10‑bedded specialist unit providing high-quality care for patients with a wide range of acute cardiac conditions, including a 24‑hour primary PCI service for STEMI patients and care for those with acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, and arrhythmias.

As a member of our dynamic and supportive team, you will develop specialist skills in cardiac nursing and gain valuable experience in managing patients undergoing procedures in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (CCL).

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide direct nursing care to patients with cardiology conditions.
  • Prepare and undertake agreed clinical activities.
  • Implement and maintain high standards of patient care, ensuring trust policies and guidelines are adhered to.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient records and maintain high standards of nursing documentation, in accordance with clinical governance.
  • Be aware of the complaints procedure and incident reporting and apply it as needed.
  • Escalate as appropriate any untoward incidents, complaints and ward/staff issues.
  • Participate in ongoing clinical supervision and audits.
  • Maintain own personal portfolio/profile and take responsibility for annual updates on current legislative/hospital issues.
  • Ensure all training undertaken is evaluated to determine its effectiveness in practice and that all objectives have been met.
  • Assist in teaching programmes for student nurses/new staff and newly qualified nurses, contributing toward a positive learning environment.
  • Promote good working relationships within the multidisciplinary team and support the ward manager to achieve high morale within the team.
  • Provide specialist advice in cardiac procedures and support the promotion of health.
  • Use all resources efficiently and effectively, maintaining an awareness of budgetary implications.
  • Practice extended clinical roles such as venepuncture, cannulation, IV additives and male catheterisation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Nursing degree or equivalent.
  • Current NMC registration.

Desirable criteria

  • Mentorship or equivalent qualification.
  • Cardiology or acute care courses.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Effective working with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Previous experience in hospital settings.

Desirable criteria

  • Cardiology or acute care experience.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Basic knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Basic knowledge of ECG.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to manage difficult/stressful situations.
  • Time management and delegation skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Appropriate cardiology or acute care courses.
