The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has launched a significant investment in its Cancer Services workforce over the last few years. The additional staff will ensure the service is fit for purpose to provide ongoing excellent care and the roll‑out of new technologies and services.

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic nurse to work within the oncology team as a nurse specialist for lung cancer and support the development of the lung surgical pathway. You will work closely with the clinical nurse specialists for lung cancer, oncology consultants, surgical teams at Derriford and the team in the Sunrise centre and other colleagues across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

As a role model for cancer nursing practice, you will develop the skills to assess, manage and treat patients, and support and lead the introduction of new initiatives and pathways. You will have post‑registration experience in oncology, haematology, palliative care or a relevant speciality. Within this role you will be required to develop clinical leadership, manage change, and have knowledge of managing resources, people and situations effectively, whilst keeping a calm head in a challenging environment.

This is a part‑time position (22.5 hours per week)

Job responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to lung cancer patients receiving anti‑cancer therapy.
  • Deliver seamless holistic care for patients and families.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members across the Trust and at the Sunrise centre.
  • Support and participate in the development of the lung surgical pathway.
  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with NHS standards and policies.

Qualifications

  • NMC registration.
  • First level degree or underway.
  • Completion or commitment to undertake relevant extended role competencies.
  • Completion or commitment to undertake post‑registration qualification in Oncology/palliative care or a relevant specialty.
  • Managerial experience or leading a team (Nurse in charge experience).

Experience

  • Relevant nursing experience in oncology or related specialty.
  • Audit or research experience.
  • Teaching and education experience.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Involvement in MDT discussion.

Practical & Intellectual Skills

  • Excellent verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.

Training

  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
