Hours and Salary

Full Time – Permanent. Office-based at our premises in Chesterfield.

Base salary: £45,000–£52,000. Bonus: up to £3,000 per year, linked to measurable outcomes.

Role

We are looking to appoint a highly skilled Technical Sales Engineer to join our internal sales team. This is a permanent, office‑based role for someone with strong pump industry knowledge and the ability to bring immediate technical value to the business. This is NOT a trainee position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle inbound technical enquiries from trade, commercial, industrial and domestic customers.
  • Speak confidently about pump applications, head, flow rates and suitability of equipment.
  • Ask the right technical questions before recommending a product.
  • Select suitable pumps, control equipment, hose, fittings and accessories.
  • Produce accurate quotations quickly and professionally.
  • Explain product suitability clearly and identify appropriate solutions (standard, package, engineered).
  • Support customers with technical queries before and after purchase.
  • Help convert enquiries into profitable orders.

Product Selection and Application Knowledge

  • Submersible drainage pumps, sewage and wastewater pumps, puddle pumps and flood response pumps.
  • Booster pumps and pressure systems, borehole and well pumps, surface mounted pumps, engine‑driven pumps.
  • Site dewatering equipment, control panels, floats, sensors, automation.
  • Hose, fittings, valves, accessories and pump stations or packaged systems.
  • Industrial, construction, civils, utilities, drainage, agriculture or water management applications.

Quoting, Pricing and Commercial Judgement

  • Quote the right product for the application, considering margin, availability and suitability.
  • Avoid unnecessary discounting and upsell relevant accessories and add‑ons.
  • Identify higher‑value opportunities and follow up quotations properly.
  • Keep the CRM updated with accurate notes and next actions.
  • Balance excellent customer service with strong commercial judgement.

Supplier and Team Support

  • Liaise with suppliers on technical selections and product availability.
  • Support the sales team with more complex technical enquiries.
  • Feed product knowledge back into the business and support new product ranges.
  • Help improve technical standards across the team and share market insight with management.

Person We Are Looking For

  • Technically strong and confident speaking to customers.
  • Experienced in pump selection and accurate quotations.
  • Commercially aware, practical and solutions‑focused.
  • Organised, disciplined and able to work at pace without supervision.
  • Strong follow‑up skills, calm under pressure and willing to support colleagues.

Essential Experience

  • Strong experience in the pump industry or a closely related technical sector.
  • Ability to understand pump applications and select suitable products.
  • Experience handling technical sales enquiries and producing quotations.
  • Good understanding of customer applications and commercial awareness around margin.
  • Strong communication skills by phone and email, confidence using CRM and quotation systems.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with pump brands such as Tsurumi, Ebara, Flygt, Grindex, Caprari, DAB, Lowara, Grundfos, Pedrollo, Zenit, JS, Koshin.
  • Construction, civils, utilities, drainage or wastewater sectors.
  • Experience with pump stations, control panels, float switches, level sensors or automation.
  • Borehole, booster, sewage, drainage or site dewatering applications.
  • Experience in trade counter, distributor, manufacturer or hire industry.
  • Reading pump curves, datasheets or technical specifications.
  • Working with contractors, facilities managers, councils, farms, utilities, engineers or domestic customers.

This Role Is NOT Suitable For Someone Who…

  • Is looking for an entry‑level sales role or has no real pump experience.
  • Requires months of basic product training before becoming useful.
  • Is uncomfortable handling technical enquiries or working at pace.
  • Avoids following up quotations, focuses only on turnover ignoring margin.
  • Struggles with accuracy, does not like using CRM systems or prefers a slow‑moving corporate environment.
  • Is not confident speaking directly with customers.

  • Produce high‑quality quotations and convert more enquiries into profitable orders.

  • Increase accessory, add‑on and bundled sales.
