We are recruiting for two Substantive Consultant positions in the Pain Management and Anaesthesia service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Positions are pending college approval.

These positions will complement an existing medical team of 4 Consultants and 1 Nurse Consultant.

Job Plan

  • Position 1: 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week across Chronic Pain and Anaesthetics, including 8 DCCs and 2 SPAs.
  • Position 2: Same as Position 1.
  • No on‑call commitments.

Pain Management sessions include outpatient clinics and operating sessions in the Day Surgery Unit.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provision of a comprehensive elective service with Consultant colleagues.
  • Maintain clinic and theatre numbers in keeping with guidelines.
  • Continue responsibility for the care of patients in charge and ensure proper functioning of the department.
  • Set appropriate timescales for triage of referrals, manage medication and paperwork, and work with partners, clinical service managers, nurses and consultants to manage caseload flexibly.
  • Ensure achievement of national and local clinical priorities, such as maximum waiting times for referral to treatment.

These duties are subject to review and may be mutually agreed with the appointee, Consultant colleagues and the Trust.

Service Overview

The Pain Management service offers consultant‑led outpatient, diagnostic, treatment and intervention services, working closely with community Pain providers to deliver care in the appropriate setting.

The service is based at the City Hospital Campus, with a dedicated outpatient unit (excluding paediatrics at the QMC Campus) and a specific area for outpatient pain injections. Day‑case pain injections are undertaken in our Day Surgery Unit. The Nurse Consultant provides nurse‑led Pain Management, including post‑injection follow‑up, medication and annual reviews.
