Location: Rainham/Ponton Road Workshop (16:00 – 00:00 Evening/Night shift, requires travel to various sites in London)

Salary & Allowances

The starting salary is £53,143. This includes a basic salary of £42,061, which will increase annually until £43,838. Additional allowances: night shift £8,073, location £2,009, non‑pensionable £1,000. Total allowances sum to £3,009.

Role Overview

The police vehicle fleet is a critical physical asset. The Mobile Maintenance Unit Technician ensures that the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) mobile fleet remains safe, effective, and ready for duty. The role involves roadside repair, maintenance and recovery for a diverse fleet of specialist vehicles across London, requiring 24/7 availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver efficient roadside repair, maintenance, and recovery services for a varied fleet of specialist vehicles, responding to calls and operating breakdown patrol vehicles.
  • Determine serviceability of all vehicle components (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic) using industry‑recognised tools and equipment.
  • Visually inspect, road‑test vehicles and interpret feedback, diagnose electrical faults with high and low technology test equipment, and record measurements and data in technical reports.
  • Maintain stock levels to ensure timely delivery of services and reduce recoveries or workshop visits.
  • Follow manufacturer warranty processes and repair instructions, reading wiring diagrams and using interactive diagnostic tools.
  • Coordinate with workshop teams to align roadside repair activity with detailed repair work for high first‑time fix rates.
  • Stay updated on latest vehicle repair and maintenance advances; undertake personal development and keep current with standards and legislation.
  • Transfer knowledge and skills to less technical staff and apprentices.
  • Uphold safe working practices, complying with regulatory and safety standards.

Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Understanding of fleet services operations.
  • Sound knowledge of Health & Safety, risk assessments, COSHH regulations (HSG261).
  • Knowledge of police vehicle conversions, specialised onboard equipment, warning and communication systems.
  • In‑depth knowledge of vehicle examination processes for maintenance and repair per Police policy and DVSA standards.
  • Knowledge of all vehicle platforms, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical systems, and detailed maintenance procedures.
  • Understanding of warranty processes and diagnostic reporting.
  • Proficiency with workshop tools, machinery, equipment, calibration procedures.

Skills

  • Accurately determine serviceability of vehicle components.
  • Visual inspection and road‑testing of vehicles, interpreting operational feedback.
  • Diagnose electrical faults accurately.
  • Follow manufacturer repair instructions and wiring diagrams.
  • Record measurements and data, compile technical reports.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; work independently or in a team.
  • Methodical problem‑solving ability.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, including a range of manufacturers (desirable).
  • Roadside repair and emergency response/recovery experience (desirable).
  • First Aid appointed person training (desirable).
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) from internal or external training programs (desirable).
  • NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent; accreditation for roadside repair/recovery or willingness to undertake training in post; DVSA Nominated Tester (desirable).
