This is a hands‑on role learning how to maintain, diagnose and repair motor vehicles. From basic maintenance including servicing and basic repairs through to more complex repairs including engine re‑builds.

Wage

£16,640 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age.

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices.

Training Course

Motor vehicle service and maintenance technician – light vehicle (level 3).

Hours

Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm with a 30‑minute lunch break and a 15‑minute tea break each day.

40 hours a week.

Start Date

Monday 7 September 2026.

Duration

3 years.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.

What you’ll do at work

  • Carrying out vehicle servicing and check overs
  • Carrying out general repairs including changing brake pads and discs, tyres, clutches and suspension items
  • Diagnosing faults
  • Ordering parts from suppliers
  • Assisting with more complex repairs
  • Assisting other team members where necessary
  • Keeping the workshop clean and tidy

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Training course details

  • Contribute to maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word‑process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.
  • The apprentice will be working towards the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle).
  • College attendance will be at Colchester Institute – the Colchester Campus one day per week during term time.

Requirements

GCSE in maths and English (grade A*‑C/9‑4 or equivalent).

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

This is manual work in a workshop which is open to the outdoors.

After this apprenticeship

Upon completion you can work as a qualified vehicle technician in a garage or dealership and later progress into specialist roles like diagnostics or electric vehicles, senior technician jobs, or management positions.
