Criminal Justice Officer – HMP Whitemoor

Location: March, East Midlands – Whitemoor, Longhill Rd, March PE15 0PR

Salary: £35,875 per year for a 39‑hour week (including 20% unsocial hours)

Vacancy type: Merit (Full Time)

Key Responsibilities

  • Protect the public and maintain safety within the prison.
  • Work with prisoners as a peacekeeper, counsellor or teacher, building constructive relationships.
  • Support colleagues and act as a team to ensure the prison remains safe.
  • Fulfil a variety of duties across shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum age 18.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (Ireland, Commonwealth, EU, Turkey and family members as specified).
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment (eyesight, hearing, blood pressure).
  • Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC) – proof of UK residency for last 3 years.
  • Provide clear, non‑offensive tattoos; facial tattoos not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons.

Working Hours and Shift Patterns

Prison operates 24/7; shifts include evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays. A 39‑hour week is the standard.

Pay and Benefits

  • Annual salary depends on weekly hours: • 37 hours – £33,746 • 39 hours – £35,875 • 41 hours – £38,003
  • Annual holiday: 25 days (rising to 30 after 10 years).
  • Paid time off for public holidays and one extra privilege day.
  • Relevant Civil Service pension with 28.97 % employer contributions.

Assessment and Recruitment

Applicants undergo an online test (judgement, numerical skills), a values‑based assessment, and an online assessment centre. Successful candidates may receive a merit list offer.

Security and Vetting

As a high‑security prison, applicants will need enhanced Level 2 vetting and a Counter‑Terrorism Check. Proof of UK residency for the three preceding years is mandatory.
