Salary: £35,875 per year for a 39‑hour week (includes 20% unsocial hours)

About the role

Prison officers protect the public and make an impact on prisoners’ lives. In this fast‑paced environment you will act as a peacekeeper, counsellor or teacher, building constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners. Teamwork is vital; you will support colleagues and maintain a safe environment. The role involves working various shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain order and safety in the prison.
  • Support prisoners in their personal development.
  • Assist with the physical and emotional well‑being of inmates.
  • Deliver training, educational or therapeutic programmes as required.
  • Cooperate with fellow officers and other staff to implement security procedures.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements (see details below).
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment.
  • Meet eyesight and hearing standards.
  • Must not have any offensive or violent tattoos; facial tattoos generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious or medical reasons.
  • For a category A prison: have been a UK resident for the last 3 years.
  • Holder of a valid UK driving licence is beneficial but not essential (unless specified).

Nationality requirements

  • Nationals of the Republic of Ireland.
  • Nationals of Commonwealth countries with the right to work in the UK.
  • Nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and certain family members.
  • Individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain who were eligible for EUSS before 31 December 2020.
  • Turkish nationals and certain family members with the right to work in the Civil Service.

Pay & Working Hours

The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you may choose 37, 39 or 41 hours a week.

  • 37 hours = £33,746 per year.
  • 39 hours = £35,875 per year.
  • 41 hours = £38,003 per year.

Prisons operate 24/7, and you will cover a range of shift patterns (evenings, nights, weekends, public holidays). Most prisons use a 39‑hour week pattern.
