Working for BAM Nuttall Ltd, this apprenticeship focuses on construction materials testing within high‑profile projects such as the HS2 rail line. The role offers a blend of on‑site and laboratory experience.

The Package

  • Starting salary of £23,000 per year (increasing to National Minimum/Living Wage after 12 months)
  • Weekly pay
  • 22 days annual leave plus bank holidays (2 weeks off for Christmas)
  • 2 wellbeing days per year and 1 volunteering day
  • Overtime available – uplift for working weekends
  • Working hours 40 hours per week (plus weekend overtime where needed); Monday to Friday 7:30 AM–5:30 PM
  • On site canteen + kitchen
  • Opportunity to remain permanent with company after apprenticeship as a laboratory technician, starting salary £25,000 per year
  • Opportunity to progress dependent on performance

Key Responsibilities

  • Carrying out sampling and testing of construction materials, soils, aggregates and concrete in line with standards and customer specification.
  • Carrying out a site risk assessment.
  • Ensuring equipment is calibrated and reporting any faults to line manager.
  • Entering and completing records, readings and results on appropriate sheets.
  • Communicating clear instructions to site teams based on client specification.
  • Providing concise data to demonstrate compliance.
  • Conducting testing using calibrated equipment to demonstrate compliance.
  • Delivering daily/weekly work programmes with site teams.
  • Maintaining a detailed site diary.
  • Maintaining a personal CPD record and CV.
  • Carrying out any other relevant duties as requested.

About You

You are someone who enjoys working on‑site and being part of real‑world construction projects. You are practical, reliable and detail‑focused, and take pride in following procedures accurately. You comfort with basic maths and data recording, and stay calm in a fast‑paced environment. You work safely and independently after training, and communicate clearly with site teams. You are motivated by contributing to tangible projects and keen to build a long‑term career in construction or materials testing.

Please note: You must be 18+ and hold a full UK manual driving licence.

Apprenticeship Eligibility

  • Be 16 or over.
  • Not be in full‑time education.
  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.

How the Apprenticeship Works

Start your career as a materials technician and gain hands‑on experience in testing and analysis in a laboratory or technical environment. Over 20 months you will combine day‑to‑day experience with structured training delivered by tutors and a dedicated mentor.

Training involves at least 6 hours per week of off‑the‑job training, including virtual learning, practical activities and applied assignments. It covers a balanced mix of live sessions, online learning and workplace training.

Upon successful completion you could progress to higher‑level qualifications such as a degree apprenticeship in Materials or Chemistry, and pursue professional recognition as a Registered Science Technician.
