Leader Education are recruiting for a confident, resilient, and enthusiastic Male Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in South Shields.

This rewarding role would suit someone who is passionate about supporting young people who face barriers to mainstream education and can provide a positive male role model within the school environment. Experience working with children or young people in an educational, youth work, sports coaching, residential care, support work, or mentoring capacity is essential.

The provision supports pupils across Key Stages 1–4 who may have experienced permanent exclusion, be at risk of exclusion, have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, additional learning needs, or require specialist support to successfully engage with education.

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping students build confidence, improve behaviour, and re-engage with learning through consistent support and positive relationship-building.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs and challenging behaviours.
  • Support students both in and out of the classroom, encouraging engagement in learning and school activities.
  • Build positive, professional relationships that promote trust, confidence, and resilience.
  • Assist teachers in delivering lessons and adapting learning activities to meet individual needs.
  • Use de-escalation strategies to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively.
  • Encourage positive behaviour, attendance, and participation across the school day.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with children or young people in an educational, youth work, sports coaching, residential care, support work, or mentoring capacity (essential)
  • A strong understanding of behaviour management and SEMH needs.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers and achieve positive outcomes.
