Senior Quantity Surveyor – Birmingham- Hybrid

Overview

We are supporting a leading UK specialist contractor in the appointment of a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join their pre-construction function.

Operating nationally, the business delivers complex construction and engineering solutions across a range of residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. They work closely with major contractors, developers, and partners, providing commercially driven and technically informed solutions from early engagement through to delivery.

This is a key role within the commercial team, offering the opportunity to lead pre-contract activity, influence commercial strategy, and play a pivotal role in securing high-value projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial aspects of pre-construction activity, supporting the development of winning bids and proposals
  • Take ownership of contract negotiations, including agreeing terms and conditions with Tier 1 contractors, Tier 2 partners, and major developers
  • Provide strategic commercial input into value engineering, alternative solutions, and bid strategy
  • Review tender documentation in detail, identifying key risks, opportunities, and commercial positions
  • Work closely with estimating, engineering, and operational teams to ensure robust and competitive submissions
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders at early project stages
  • Support pricing strategies, commercial governance, and risk management across bids
  • Lead the commercial handover of successful tenders into delivery teams

Key Requirements

  • Proven experience operating at Senior Quantity Surveyor level within construction, civils, or specialist subcontracting
  • Strong track record in pre-contract commercial activity, including leading tenders and negotiations
  • Demonstrable experience negotiating T&Cs with Tier 1 contractors and/or major housebuilders/developers
  • Strong knowledge of contract forms such as NEC and JCT
  • Highly developed commercial acumen, with the ability to influence at both project and stakeholder level
  • Confident communicator, capable of engaging with senior internal and external stakeholders
  • Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying or related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Professional accreditation (e.g. RICS) desirable
