We are working with a leading City law firm seeking an experienced non-contentious Construction Lawyer to support their real estate and construction practice on an initial 3-month contract.

The role will focus on advising on high-value, complex projects, with a particular emphasis on tenant-side representation for HQ relocations, alongside the drafting and negotiation of construction documentation for fit-out contractors and specialist consultants.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly regarded team on a short-term basis, supporting business-critical matters in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

Tenant Representation on HQ Relocation Projects

  • Advise on the construction aspects of major office relocation and headquarters projects, acting for tenants.
  • Support on agreements for lease, licences for alterations, and related real estate documentation from a construction perspective.
  • Work closely with real estate colleagues, clients, and project teams to ensure effective allocation of risk and alignment with delivery timelines.
  • Assist with negotiations involving landlords, developers, and their advisors.

Construction Contract Drafting and Negotiation

  • Draft, review and negotiate a range of construction documents, including:
  • Building contracts (including JCT forms)
  • Fit-out contracts
  • Professional appointments (e.g. architects, engineers, project managers, cost consultants)
  • Collateral warranties and third-party rights
  • Adapt standard form documentation to reflect the commercial position and risk appetite of the client.

Fit-Out and Workplace Projects

  • Advise on legal issues arising from office fit-outs and refurbishment works, often within tight project timelines.
  • Support clients on procurement strategies and contractor engagement.
  • Provide practical, solutions-focused advice to facilitate smooth project delivery.

Specialist Consultant Engagement

  • Review and negotiate consultant appointments across a range of specialist disciplines.
  • Ensure appropriate provisions are in place in relation to scope of services, liability, insurance, and performance standards.

Risk Management and Advisory

  • Identify and mitigate legal and commercial risks on live construction projects.
  • Deliver clear, pragmatic advice tailored to a commercial law firm client base.
  • Support dispute avoidance through robust drafting and proactive legal input.

Stakeholder Management

  • Work closely with partners and senior associates within the construction and real estate teams.
  • Liaise with clients, external counsel and project stakeholders as required.

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or another common law jurisdiction).
  • Ideally 6–8+ years’ PQE with a strong focus on non-contentious construction law.
  • Experience gained within a recognised private practice environment, ideally at a City or leading regional firm.
  • Strong working knowledge of JCT contracts, professional appointments, and ancillary construction documentation.
  • Experience advising on tenant-side development or fit-out matters is highly desirable.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with a pragmatic and commercially focused approach.
  • Able to quickly integrate into an existing team and manage a busy workload from the outset.

Why Apply?

  • Opportunity to work with a top-tier City law firm on high-profile, complex matters.
  • Exposure to premium clients and sophisticated real estate and construction projects.
  • Flexible, hybrid working environment.
