Job Title: Construction Lawyer (Non-Contentious)

Contract Type: Initial 3-Month Contract (starting July 2026)
Overview
We are working with a leading City law firm seeking an experienced non-contentious Construction Lawyer to support their real estate and construction practice on an initial 3-month contract.
The role will focus on advising on high-value, complex projects, with a particular emphasis on tenant-side representation for HQ relocations, alongside the drafting and negotiation of construction documentation for fit-out contractors and specialist consultants.

Key Responsibilities
Tenant Representation on HQ Relocation Projects
- Advise on the construction aspects of major office relocation and headquarters projects, acting for tenants.
- Support on agreements for lease, licences for alterations, and related real estate documentation from a construction perspective.
- Work closely with real estate colleagues, clients, and project teams to ensure effective allocation of risk and alignment with delivery timelines.
- Assist with negotiations involving landlords, developers, and their advisors.
Construction Contract Drafting and Negotiation
- Draft, review and negotiate a range of construction documents, including:
- Building contracts (including JCT forms)
- Fit-out contracts
- Professional appointments (e.g. architects, engineers, project managers, cost consultants)
- Collateral warranties and third-party rights
- Adapt standard form documentation to reflect the commercial position and risk appetite of the client.
Fit-Out and Workplace Projects
- Advise on legal issues arising from office fit-outs and refurbishment works, often within tight project timelines.
- Support clients on procurement strategies and contractor engagement.
- Provide practical, solutions-focused advice to facilitate smooth project delivery.
Specialist Consultant Engagement
- Review and negotiate consultant appointments across a range of specialist disciplines.
- Ensure appropriate provisions are in place in relation to scope of services, liability, insurance, and performance standards.
Risk Management and Advisory
- Identify and mitigate legal and commercial risks on live construction projects.
- Deliver clear, pragmatic advice tailored to a commercial law firm client base.
- Support dispute avoidance through robust drafting and proactive legal input.
Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with partners and senior associates within the construction and real estate teams.
- Liaise with clients, external counsel and project stakeholders as required.
Candidate Profile
- Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or another common law jurisdiction).
- Ideally 6–8+ years’ PQE with a strong focus on non-contentious construction law.
- Experience gained within a recognised private practice environment, ideally at a City or leading regional firm.
- Strong working knowledge of JCT contracts, professional appointments, and ancillary construction documentation.
- Experience advising on tenant-side development or fit-out matters is highly desirable.
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with a pragmatic and commercially focused approach.
- Able to quickly integrate into an existing team and manage a busy workload from the outset.
