Consultant Anaesthetist in Paediatric Anaesthesia

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Consultant Anaesthetist to join the paediatric anaesthetic group. The post will provide anaesthesia and peri‑operative care for paediatric and neonatal surgery across multiple Trust sites.
Job summary
- Lead paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia service across the Trust, including fixed theatre days, general paediatric surgery, emergency and neonatal procedures.
- Provide flexible cover for paediatric lists of all non‑cardiac specialties.
- Serve as an on‑call consultant within the paediatric anaesthetic group.
- Participate in clinical governance, teaching, research and continuous professional development.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high‑quality anaesthetic care for paediatric and neonatal patients.
- Participate in pre‑operative assessments and intra‑operative care across a range of surgical specialties.
- Engage in clinical audit, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Facilitate teaching for clinical students, junior doctors and other trainees.
- Maintain up‑to‑date professional knowledge and adhere to Trust policies and statutory regulations.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Training
- Medical qualification approved by the GMC.
- GMC specialist registration or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC specialist register by the closing date.
- Minimum 6 months experience in Anaesthesia in the NHS.
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) or equivalent.
- CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent.
Desirable
- Additional postgraduate degrees (MD, BSc, MSc, PhD).
- Advanced fellowship or training in paediatric sub‑specialty.
- Life‑support instructor qualifications (e.g., APLS, EPALS).
Experience
- Independent consultant‑level practice in paediatric anaesthesia.
- Experience in neonatal surgery with advanced training.
- Min. 12 months advanced specialist paediatric anaesthesia training as a senior trainee or post‑CCT fellow.
- Min. 3 months experience in paediatric or neonatal critical care or transport services.
- Evidence of complex clinical decision‑making and management at consultant level.
Desirable
- Experience in paediatric spinal surgery anaesthesia.
- Consultant‑level experience in both paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia.
Skills & Knowledge
- Leadership, decision‑making and effective time management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills in English.
- Proven teaching, training and research engagement.
- Knowledge of clinical governance, audit, risk management and quality improvement.
- Ability to peer‑review research and contribute to clinical trials.
Desirable
- Leadership or management qualifications.
- Experience in NHS management projects and change implementation.
- Knowledge of finance and budgeting.
- Information technology proficiency.
- Published research and grant experience.
Other Requirements
- Full registration and licence to practise in the UK.
- Full UK driving licence.

Salary
