Job description

As a Senior Data / AI Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of sophisticated data pipelines, advanced analytics solutions, and AI-driven capabilities that enable strategic business decisions and support digital transformation. You will provide technical leadership within a workstream, ensuring high‑quality delivery through guidance and oversight. In addition, you will mentor junior team members, sharing knowledge and embedding best practices. You will work closely with stakeholders and business analysts to understand their requirements and translate these into effective technical solutions that align with business goals.

Responsibilities

  • Workstream Leadership: Lead a technical workstream within larger projects, coordinating activities, setting priorities, and ensuring high‑quality delivery.
  • Mentoring: Support and mentor junior team members within your workstream, sharing expertise and promoting best practices.
  • Data Engineering & Development: Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines, datasets, and data models to support analytics, reporting, and AI use cases.
  • AI & Advanced Analytics: Develop and implement AI / machine learning models where appropriate, supporting use cases such as prediction, classification, automation, and insight generation.
  • Generative AI and Context Engineering: Develop generative AI‑enabled solutions using large language models and context/prompt engineering.
  • Data Integration: Integrate data from multiple sources, ensuring data quality, consistency, and reliability.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with Business Analysts, Data Analysts, and product teams to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Testing & Quality: Implement testing, validation, and monitoring to ensure data accuracy, model performance, and solution reliability.
  • Performance & Optimisation: Optimise data processing, storage, and model performance for scalability and efficiency.
  • Documentation: Produce clear technical documentation covering data models, pipelines, logic, and assumptions.
  • Governance & Security: Adhere to data governance, security, and privacy standards throughout the development lifecycle.

Technical requirements

  • Experience mentoring or coaching junior team members, with a demonstrated ability to support team development and knowledge sharing.
  • Proven ability to lead technical workstreams and deliver results in complex environments.
  • Experience engaging with senior stakeholders and contributing to strategic discussions, with the confidence to influence decision‑making and drive outcomes.
  • Proven experience as a Data Developer, Data Engineer, AI Engineer, or similar role. Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and/or similar languages.
  • Experience building data pipelines and working with structured and unstructured data.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI and/or machine learning frameworks (e.g. scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Langchain) is desirable.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms, data warehouses, or big data technologies is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.

Security clearance

Appointment to this role is subject to the candidate being eligible for and successfully obtaining UK Security Check (SC) security clearance.

Location & working arrangement

You will be based in Belfast with a hybrid working model.
