A vacancy has arisen for a Senior Physiotherapist (Team Leader) Musculoskeletal Outpatients to join our large team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. This role is part of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and offers full‑time and part‑time opportunities within a team that includes FCP roles, Major trauma clinics, Fracture clinics, T&O clinics, Spinal clinics, Pain clinics, ED, SEMS and Haemophilia, working closely with the multidisciplinary team.
The new Therapy Outpatient Department is expected to open in 2027, providing a modern therapy environment. The role offers substantial support for CPD, in‑service training, structured supervision and collaboration with Clinical Specialists.

Responsibilities
You will contribute to service development, quality improvement and operational delivery, supporting directives from Clinical Specialists, Senior Management or during your periods as Team Leader of the day.
Key duties include managing a complex caseload of acute and chronic musculoskeletal patients, participating in triage of referrals, and working within consultant clinics across a variety of specialities.
You will oversee the development of qualified and non‑qualified staff, support student and junior staff, and participate in the delivery of a comprehensive in‑service training programme. Flexibility with working hours, including late clinics, weekend work and supporting the weekend trauma rota, is required.
Qualifications
- Physiotherapy or professional qualification, e.g. MCSP, BSc or MSc.
- Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (CSP or equivalent).
- Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non‑clinical CPD, e.g., post‑registration training, management/leadership competencies and a detailed personal development portfolio.
- Relevant accredited postgraduate education/courses in musculoskeletal physiotherapy.
Experience
- Significant senior post‑registration experience in a musculoskeletal specialty within an acute NHS organisation, treating both acute and chronic patients.
- Staff management experience, including supervision and performance management.
- Experience in education and clinical training of others.
- Some experience of clinical/service evaluation.
- Proficient knowledge and skill in specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of complex acute and chronic musculoskeletal presentations.
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology, current evidence in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and advanced clinical reasoning.
- Good understanding of IT systems and their application to clinical practice.

- Ability to work autonomously within a specialist clinical area and apply broad standards & guidelines.
- Leadership and influential skills, capable of commanding confidence among senior therapists, consultants, senior nurses and managers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to convey complex clinical information clearly.
- Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, including delegation and problem‑solving.
- On‑call capability (if appropriate) to advise and assess patients as a lone physiotherapist.
- Commitment to Trust policies on data protection, equality, diversity, and health and safety.
- Self‑motivation and ability to motivate a team, with a reliable attendance record.
- Physical fitness and resilience to meet the demands of the post and flexible working to accommodate service priorities.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines and targets.

- Post‑registration MSc.
- Attended student educator course.
- Advanced physical skills for precision mobilisation.
- Ability to challenge current practice and implement change.
- Teaching, supervisory and appraisal skills.
- Interpretation and analysis of policy, clinical guidelines and data.
- Knowledge of the research process and experience of clinical/service evaluation.

Salary and Benefits
Band 7 – £49,387.00 to £56,515.00 per year (Agenda for Change).
Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time, flexible working.
