Job Description:

Highways Project Quantity Surveyor – Preston | Up to £60,000 + Package

Are you a Highways Project Quantity Surveyor who enjoys taking real ownership of projects rather than being a small part of a large Tier 1 team? This opportunity is ideal if you want to run your own jobs, manage contracts end-to-end, and play a key role in delivering civil engineering schemes across the North West.

My client is seeing a steady increase in project workload and is now looking to strengthen their team with a Highways Project Quantity Surveyor who can hit the ground running and take responsibility from day one.

What you’ll gain from this Highways Project Quantity Surveyor role

  • Manage your own projects with autonomy and trust
  • Work across varied civil engineering schemes (no repetitive mega-project work)
  • Be part of a close-knit team where your contribution is visible
  • Benefit from a strong package including car allowance and pension
  • Have exposure to multiple projects at once, building your experience quickly

About the company

My client is a well-established civil engineering contractor delivering projects across the North West. Their work spans highways, structures, bridges, and public realm schemes, typically operating on programmes lasting 6-12 months.

They focus on delivering quality projects without the bureaucracy of large Tier 1 organisations, giving you the opportunity to take on real responsibility and make a tangible impact.

What you will be doing

  • Manage 2 projects simultaneously, typically lasting 6-12 months
  • Take full commercial responsibility from pre-contract through to final account
  • Administer NEC contracts and ensure compliance throughout project delivery
  • Handle cost planning, forecasting, and reporting
  • Work closely with site teams to ensure commercial success
  • Manage subcontractor procurement, payments, and variations
  • Support projects during ECI and design stages where required
  • Be primarily site‑based depending on project location

What you will need to succeed

  • Proven experience in civil engineering (highways, structures, bridges, or public realm)
  • Experience running your own projects with significant responsibility
  • Strong NEC contract administration knowledge
  • Confidence managing projects independently rather than within large teams
  • Ability to manage multiple schemes simultaneously
  • A proactive and hands‑on approach to commercial management

(My client is flexible on job titles and values experience over labels.)

Salary and benefits

  • £45,000 – £60,000 per annum (salary dependent on experience)
  • Company car or £6,000-£7,000 car allowance
  • 26 days holiday + option to buy up to 5 additional days
  • 6.5% pension contribution
  • On-site doctor available every Friday
  • Long-term permanent opportunity with consistent project flow

Additional details

  • Location: Preston (office-based when not on site)
  • Working pattern: Primarily site-based, depending on project requirements
  • Some flexibility to work from home during ECI/design stages
  • Start date: ASAP
