Support Worker – Russets

Salary: Band £26,473 to £28,239 p.a. (£21,464 – £22,896 for 30 hours), plus 17% shift enhancement depending on rota. Average 30 hours per week.

The Service

Russets is a purpose‑built respite care service in Hilsea that supports adults with learning disabilities residing in the Portsmouth area. In addition to respite care, Russets provides residential accommodation and is the only unit of its kind in Portsmouth.

Your New Role

Using a person‑centred approach, you will look after the physical, emotional, cultural and social needs of service users. Responsibilities include personal care, assisting clients during meal times and facilitating all aspects of daily living. You will deliver social activities that promote mental health and wellbeing, improving quality of life.

You will act as a key worker for specific individuals, ensuring health and wellbeing information is recorded, communicated to assistant managers and others in accordance with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) fundamental standards. You will raise any concerns with a manager immediately.

You will support a diverse group of users with a range of care needs, including challenging behaviour. Responsibilities include monitoring, hourly checks, and ensuring all care needs are met. The role may involve person‑moving and handling duties and light food preparation.

Who is the Person – Summary

You will need the ability to communicate in clear, accurate spoken English and understand the needs of people with different types of learning disabilities. You should have experience in a formal paid or unpaid caring role, be capable of monitoring, recognising concerns and producing accurate records. Respect for dignity, privacy and choice is essential. You should be flexible, adaptable, able to work as part of a team, and capable of working independently. Strong communication, interpersonal and written skills, and an understanding of cultural and linguistic needs are required. You will attend training (on‑site and off‑site) and development to progress toward a Level 2/3 Social Care apprenticeship and complete the Care Certificate. You must be competent in medication administration and able to handle emergencies confidently, and you must understand client confidentiality and data protection.
