Healthcare Assistant (HCA) & Phlebotomist – 20‑25 hours per week
Supporting the practice in achieving the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and supplementary national services (SNS) as well as local initiatives towards patient care.
Responsibilities
- Assist in long‑term management reviews for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
- Assist in Minor Surgery Clinics.
- Conduct BP checks, new patient registrations checks, primary prevention and asthma reviews, urinalysis, height, BMI, smoking and weight advice.
- Work under supervision of clinicians to provide patient care.
- Perform measurements of blood pressure, temperature, pulse, rhythm, height and weight.
- Refer patients to weight management services.
- Carry out peak flow measurements/FENO following additional training.
- Collect specimens, perform urinalysis and apply dressings as directed by the practice nurse.
- Provide new patient health checks.
- Recognise changes in patient observations and report and act accordingly.
- Assist in emergency management.
- Enable patients to access appropriate professionals.
- Act as a chaperone.
- Provide health‑promotion literature.
- Maintain emergency trolleys and home‑visit bags.
- Carry out NHS health checks, CVD/diabetic and other appropriate reviews.
- Administer flu, shingles and pneumococcal vaccines as per ICB/practice guidelines.
- Contribute to infection control management.
- Spirometry & FeNO.
- Order vaccines as directed.
- Check stock and drugs for temperature and expiry.
Qualifications
- GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths, NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care literate and able to perform basic numerical calculations.
- Fluent in spoken and written English; accurate record‑keeping.
- Ability to store and retrieve files from numerical, alphabetical and computerised filing systems.
- Computer skills including EMISweb clinical system; able to work on own initiative.
- Organise delegated work.
- Health Care Support experience; qualified and fully phlebotomy trained with experience.
- Experience of dealing with the public face‑to‑face and over the telephone.
- Experience within a practice setting, as health care assistant or equivalent.
- Knowledge of local community; understanding of a multi‑cultural, racially diverse population.
- Awareness of health and safety issues; understanding of accurate record‑keeping; understanding of equal opportunities.
- Understanding of patient confidentiality and consequences of breaching it.
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, multi‑agency primary care team.
- Polite and helpful manner.
- Enthusiasm to learn and openness to alternative working practices.
- Flexible with working hours.
- Must have Hepatitis B/Covid vaccination or be willing to undergo a vaccination programme.
- Maths & English at GCSE level or equivalent.
- Fluent in one or more local community languages and willingness to use it in working with the public.
