Role Overview
Applications are invited from individuals who have the necessary skills to work in both the Mortuary and the Cellular Pathology Laboratory. The post holder will act as an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, participating in a Mortuary and Post Mortems Service, undertaking both hospital and medico-legal post mortems, storing remains, and handling the routine workload of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory, which includes specimen reception, microtomy, embedding, and non‑gynae cytology specimen preparation.
Responsibilities
- Perform hospital and medico‑legal post mortems and manage storage of remains.
- Handle face‑to‑face interactions with bereaved relatives during traumatic incidents, requiring excellent people skills.
- Maintain good physical fitness to exert intense physical effort intermittently throughout the working day.
- Participate in the routine workload of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory, including specimen reception, microtomy, embedding and non‑gynae cytology specimen preparation.
- Work a 5‑day week and participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota for the 24‑hour Mortuary service throughout the year.
Training
As a trainee APT you will complete a period of training and must attain the RSPH Diploma Level 3 in Anatomical Pathology Technology.
Qualifications
- Good standard of general education (at least 5 standard grades) and a higher qualification in a science subject.
- Previous experience working in the funeral profession.
- Self‑motivated with excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage and prioritise your own workload.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. NHS Highland is unable to provide candidates with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
