Role Overview
This Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of high‑integrity marine electrical equipment and control systems. From electrical design to supplier engagement and validation, this individual will act as a subject matter expert in naval‑grade systems, playing a key role in technical governance and customer satisfaction across defence programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, specification, and testing of marine electrical systems and control equipment, ensuring all deliverables meet customer and regulatory standards.
- Produce detailed technical drawings, schematics, and block diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar tools.
- Create and maintain commissioning documentation, test plans, and technical specifications for motors, VSDs, control panels, and operator control stations.
- Conduct electrical calculations including harmonic emissions and arc flash safety assessments.
- Review and approve supplier documentation and ensure technical compliance across all components.
- Support tendering processes with technical input, estimating, and bid compliance analysis.
- Participate in structured problem‑solving (e.g., FMECA, HAZOP) and contribute to R&D and continuous improvement activities.
- Represent engineering in internal reviews, supplier engagements, and customer interface meetings.
- Ensure design configuration control through effective documentation and data management systems.
- Champion quality, safety, and performance across engineering workstreams.
Key Requirements
- BEng or BSc in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, or a related discipline – or equivalent practical experience in a regulated engineering environment.
- Proven track record of delivering complex engineering solutions in marine, defence, or similarly regulated sectors.
- Proficiency in 2D electrical CAD platforms (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN) and control panel layout design.
- Strong understanding of AC/PM motor control systems, VSD technologies, and EMC/harmonics management.
- Competent in design verification and validation methodologies.
- Working knowledge of defence/maritime compliance frameworks and marine classification requirements.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and technical reporting skills.
- Comfortable interfacing with suppliers, customers, classification societies, and defence authorities.
