The Role:
A leading renewable energy and infrastructure organisation is seeking a Principal Grid Engineer to provide technical leadership for transmission and distribution grid connection activities across a diverse renewable energy portfolio.
This senior position will lead the development, optimisation and delivery of grid infrastructure associated with renewable generation, energy storage and large-scale energy demand projects. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction on grid connection matters, oversee complex engineering studies, manage key stakeholder interfaces and ensure compliance with relevant Grid Codes, connection policies and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic electrical and grid engineering expertise across renewable energy projects.
- Act as technical authority for grid connection, transmission network and Grid Code compliance matters.
- Lead the development and implementation of grid connection strategies, identifying network opportunities, constraints and reinforcement requirements.
- Maintain ownership of grid connection agreements, compliance obligations and engineering standards across the project portfolio.
- Monitor developments in grid connection policy, transmission planning and industry regulations, ensuring effective application across projects.
- Represent the organisation at industry forums, technical committees, regulatory consultations and stakeholder working groups.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and technical guidance to engineering teams.
- Lead engagement with regulators, contractors, consultants, OEMs and system operators.
- Oversee power systems analysis, network studies and technical assessments relating to capacity, fault levels, reactive power requirements and Grid Code compliance.
- Support major electrical infrastructure projects through feasibility, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational handover phases.
- Manage technical and commercial aspects of grid engineering contracts and project delivery.
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering standards, methodologies and best practices.
Requirements:
- Honours Degree (Level 8) in Electrical Engineering.
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline desirable.
- Minimum 15 years' experience within transmission and distribution systems.
- Extensive experience in HV electrical design and delivery of 110kV, 220kV and 400kV infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of grid connection processes, Grid Codes and transmission planning.
- Experience undertaking power system and earthing studies using software such as PSS®E, CDEGS, CYMCAP, ELEK or similar.
- Proven leadership and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Experience within renewable energy, utilities or major infrastructure sectors preferred.
