Housing Support Worker – Assured Shorthold Tenancy Project (Hull)

Typical Week

As an AST Housing Support Worker you’ll help people take real steps toward independence. You’ll manage a caseload across Hull, offering personalised, trauma‑informed support that helps tenants thrive and move confidently into independent living. No two days are the same. You’ll work closely with partner agencies and other key services to build strong, wrap‑around support networks for each tenant. You’ll also have the backing of a supportive team and access to multiple Target Housing office bases. Office hours are generally Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm with a 20‑minute unpaid lunch break.

Main Purpose

Deliver high‑quality, person‑centred housing and support services that help residents sustain their tenancies, overcome challenges, and build the skills they need to live independently (managing money and utilities).

Specific Tasks

  • Assist residents when moving in or out of Target accommodation.
  • Assess each resident’s circumstances, aspirations and needs to create a relevant and realistic support plan.
  • Act as residents’ keyworker, offering advice and support to enable independent living skills.
  • Help residents maximise income and manage their personal budgets.
  • Educate residents on their rights and responsibilities under occupancy agreements.
  • Motivate and support residents to achieve personal goals.
  • Carry out regular resident risk assessments and record them appropriately.
  • Review and adapt support plans when needs change.
  • Ensure rents are paid as required; assist with benefit claims where necessary.
  • Monitor property usage and utilities consumption.
  • Monitor compliance with occupancy agreements and inform the Service Manager to resolve any issues.
  • Ensure properties are not abandoned or damaged, taking prompt action to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Negotiate arrears repayment on behalf of residents with other bodies such as the Local Authority Housing Department.
  • Liaise with the Probation Service and other relevant bodies.
  • Support service users in resolving conflicts with neighbours and other service users.
  • Assist in delivering resident activities.
  • Maintain accurate records in line with confidentiality policy.
  • Build links with external organisations to meet resident needs.
  • Participate in office duty arrangements.
  • Provide cover for absent Housing Support Assistants & Supported Housing Assistant.
  • Accompany colleagues to appointments or visits where dual attendance is required.

General Tasks

  • Attend and participate in training sessions or activities as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and supervision.
  • Perform other duties that further Target Housing goals within Health and Safety requirements.
  • Adhere to all of Target Housing’s policies, including Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality and Health and Safety.
  • Carry out additional duties directed by senior managers as appropriate.

Person Specifications

  • MUST have a full UK driving licence and access to a personal car.
  • MUST have evidence of Right to Work in the UK (no sponsorship available).
  • Understanding of services for vulnerable groups.
  • Understanding of delivered supported housing services.
  • Understanding of services for residents in housing and supported accommodation.
  • Basic knowledge of the Welfare Benefits System.
  • Understanding of risk assessments and support planning.
  • Understanding of the UK Judiciary System.
