JOB DESCRIPTION

GMB SouthernRegion is seeking applications for the role of Support Worker on a 6-month fixed‑term contract.

GMB is one of the UK and Ireland’s largest trade unions; we’re proud to represent over half a million people from across the professional spectrum and all walks of life.

The successful candidate may on occasions be expected to travel to other locations in the Region and cover between teams in the event of absences.

This dynamic role allows the candidate to be actively involved in all areas of the region’s activities, including supporting the teams during demonstrations and campaigns and leading the handling of the office team’s social media activity.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent administration and organising skills to a high standard.
  • Good standard of verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a variety of people and organisations in a positive and helpful manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including empathy and understanding of the issues faced by members to provide support to the region’s members.
  • Ability to produce work to a high standard, ensuring accuracy and close attention to detail.
  • Discretion with confidential and sensitive materials and personal judgement, while adhering to GDPR and GMB policies.
  • Initiative in dealing with members’ problems and identifying solutions.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment on a specific work programme and frequent on‑demand, ad‑hoc requests.
  • Flexibility and prioritisation skills, undertaking projects and meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong data entry and IT skills and knowledge of data and communications platforms.
  • Teamwork and independence, co‑operating with colleagues to ensure delivery of team targets.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Using online membership systems, computer applications and platforms, and the internet for retrieving information.
  • Understanding online systems, processes and regulations within GMB guidelines.
  • Excellent and accurate keyboard and IT skills, with readiness to use online databases.

EXPERIENCE

  • Proven experience of organising and prioritising a high workload, working to tight deadlines, as part of a team and independently.
  • Experience of working with data and databases ensuring quality, integrity and accuracy.
  • Experience working in membership services.
  • Flexible attitude and a full range of administrative skills as outlined.
  • Professional and efficient execution of duties on own initiative.
  • Understanding of GMB Union and commitment to the larger Trade Union and Labour movement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in challenging environments.
