Consultant in Anaesthetics – Regional Anaesthesia, Ortho & Trauma

The Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics and trauma. Homerton University Hospital is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic anaesthetist with a variety of interests to provide general anaesthetic services and an on‑call commitment at the Homerton Hospital. This post has arisen due to expansion of services. It is offered on a full‑time basis of 10 programmed activities, 8 DCC & 2 SPA. The role includes an on‑call service covering general, obstetric emergencies and support to ICU and ED, including care of acutely ill children.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide training and services for the anaesthetic department, with flexibility of fixed commitments.
  • Participate in a rota facilitating consultant leadership, providing on‑call cover at night, weekends and during periods of leave.
  • Assist in the provision of services within the South West Network of Services directorate, demonstrating flexibility and cooperation when required.
  • Participate in the directorate’s clinical meetings.
  • Supervise, manage and teach anaesthetic and other trainees within the department.
  • Organise and participate in teaching sessions for undergraduate, postgraduate and other health professionals.
  • Mentor and appraise trainees.
  • Assist in the recruitment of trainee medical staff.
  • Provide a 1:18 on‑call commitment solely at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a medium‑sized local hospital providing acute and community health services for Hackney, the City of London and surrounding communities. It also offers specialist services in obstetrics, neonatology, fetal medicine, fertility, bariatric surgery and neurorehabilitation across East London and beyond. The Trust comprises Homerton Hospital in Hackney and the Mary Seacole Nursing Home in Shoreditch, plus community health services. It is one of London’s designated peri‑natal centres and is undergoing a major capital expansion to accommodate 6,000 births per annum and 40 neonatal intensive care cots. Over 3,500 staff are directly employed, with an additional 1,000 contract or training staff from London medical schools and universities.

Qualifications

  • On GMC’s specialist register relevant to the post, or a Specialist Registrar within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register by the interview date.
  • Higher degree or diploma (e.g. MD, PhD).

Relevant experience in speciality/sub‑speciality

  • Clinical training and experience in all aspects of anaesthesia.
  • Experience managing paediatric emergencies and teaching courses such as APLS or PALS.
  • Advanced training in regional anaesthesia.

Clinical skills

  • Proven expert clinical skills and experience.
  • Track record of adopting new techniques.

Leadership and professionalism, including quality improvement

  • Familiar with the current structure of the health service and recent initiatives and changes.
  • Proven ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions, and respond appropriately to service needs.
  • Attendance at management or leadership courses.
  • Experience managing teams or programmes/projects.

Teaching and training

  • Proven experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Experience of educational supervision and teaching skills courses leading to a teaching qualification.
  • Innovation in teaching and training.

Clinical governance

  • Evidence of contribution to effective, meaningful audit, quality improvement and clinical risk management, particularly in orthopaedic anaesthesia.
  • Quality improvement projects in regional anaesthesia, orthopaedics and trauma.

Research

  • Understanding of principles and application of clinical research.
  • Relevant research experience.
  • Publication of peer‑reviewed papers.
  • Presentation at national or international meetings.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and intelligently in written and spoken English.
  • IT skills and computer literacy.

Patient‑focused skills

  • Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience, and social skills appropriate to different types of clients.

Interpersonal skills

  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to cooperate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical and management team.

  • Aware of own strengths and weaknesses and able to deploy them effectively.
  • Professional attitude towards work and a good record of attendance.
